Rehabilitation of the wastes site in Al-Qurain
- The problem of the backfilling site began in the residential area of Al-Qurain since 1976, when cleaning companies were allowed to take advantage of pits that were used the excavation that was using the as darkeel to extract sands, in order to backfill the different types of construction debris and house wastes. While starting the execution of qurain residential project that exhale the bad smells and gases that resulted from unaired bacteria analysis (methane CH4, CO2, gases from the VOCS group).
- The Public Authority for the Environment has made efforts in cooperation with all concerned authorities to solve the problem and put it at the forefront of priorities to reduce the health and environmental impacts in the area, and the solution was limited to the total elimination of waste, partial removal of waste, or reliance on the engineering solution and take advantage of gases.
- In 1999, the engineering solution was adopted by utilizing the gases and converting them to electrical energy for the site after excluding the partial and total removal of the waste due to the difficulty of transporting and the lack of repetition of the problem for the new site. 18 A.D. The authority removed 500,000 cubic meters of waste and building debris from the roof, and placed a 17 km gas withdrawal network at gas collection points made of polyethylene with different diameters ending in 6 drawing pullout to the methane fuel power plant, and generates electrical energy to run 6 installations on site.
- When the completion of the project in the year 2002, the authority opened the door for donations to contribute to the project and involve the private and public sector, where projects were presented on the site, which received good resonance and welcoming. This site won many local and international awards.
